Let’s talk about my best and immediate way to drastically improve and communicate your ideas in writing.
It’s super, super important in this day and age, where most of our life is text-based. It’s either text, or it’s an email, Instagram captions, or a comment.
So if you're not able to write properly, this means you won't be able to communicate effectively with others and captivate them with your ideas. This also leads to you gaining less influence and less respect from whoever is reading your writing.
Don’t worry, though. After reading this, I guarantee you, you will be able to communicate well with others, gain influence when you write, and have the respect of anyone who reads your writing.
The first step to fix this:
Now, the mistake a lot of people make is that they sort of hear that they should improve their writing. They try too hard and to impress the reader.
So they get very stilted and unnatural language, and school makes this worse.
In school, we are taught to write in a very weird, unnatural way that, personally, I’m not a big fan of.
So for a moment, forget about what you were taught in school and…
What I want you to do is, when you're writing something, write it down and then look at the page and read it out loud.
I don’t want you to skip this step because a lot of people do and it’s noticeable, trust me. I see text all the time, all day, and I read it, and the first line, if you read it out loud, you can see that it didn’t fit whatsoever.
Now, if you do this for long enough time, you sort of get this internal voice that immediately spots it.
But in the beginning, you have to train it, so go through the effort of reading it out loud.
Now, that will help you find out where you need to put the commas or the periods and where the line breaks, etc.
This will help you see where words don’t fit and where text doesn’t flow.
But there is one more step to this.
The second step:
I want you to read it out loud and answer me this question:
“Would you say this to another human being in this way?”
And many, many times, for most people, the answer is no.
It would be weird. Let me give you guys an example.
I was reading some copy this morning, and the first line was, “As someone that trains 5 times a week, I was very inspired by your…” and then there was some more blah blah blah—it doesn't matter.
Now, if you read that out loud, the sentence itself wasn’t especially bad, but you wouldn’t say that to another human being, would you?
I hope not. The only people I hear say those things are the social justice people, where, you know, as a disenfranchised midget with one leg that identifies as a toaster oven, I feel discriminated against.
Well, those people use “as someone who” in the sentence, but you and I don’t talk that way, do we?
Let’s say we meet in a bar and I wanted to convey to you I was inspired by whatever video you made and that I train 5 times a week.
I wouldn’t say, “As someone who trains 5 times a week, I was very inspired.”
I’d say something like, “I saw your video and I was super inspired, man. I train 5 times a week, and it completely resonated with me, you know, because of that fact.”
Do you see how that is natural language?
Do you see how that is more natural than “as someone who trains 5 times a week”? That doesn’t feel right at all, does it?
The ultimate solution:
When writing, you want to make a good impression—I understand that—so you tense up since you're nervous about it, and it makes it not human at all.
Instead, relax, chill, and ask yourself, "Would you say this to a human being?" Read it out loud and ask yourself if you would say it to someone. If not, that's fine. Just write how you would talk to another person.
So next time you write, read it out loud and ask yourself, "Would you say this to another human being?" And I guarantee you, once you implement this, your writing will skyrocket to new levels.
